Shelly Thompson, LGPC
My name is Shelly Thompson and I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor under the supervision of Ingrid Ponciano LCMFT. I earned my Master of Science in mental health counseling from McDaniel College in 2022, and my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2017. I also completed a year-long internship at a non-profit mental health association, working for their walk-in crisis clinic and counseling services. During this internship, I had the opportunity to truly help people from various populations, all with differing life circumstances and problems.
Welcome to counseling! Seeking help is such a courageous step. You are not alone in your journey toward change, growth, and healing. Counseling is a safe space to explore your emotions, goals, and relationships. I am passionate about guiding you to become the best version of yourself and I will be there cheering you on every step of the way. Life is hard and can often leave you feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and lost. Let me walk beside you as you navigate the various paths of life. You are the expert on your life, and my role is to help you achieve your goals and live the life you imagined for yourself. Unfortunately, life doesn’t get easier, but counseling can provide the support, tools, and skills in order to tackle the roadblocks and curveballs that come your way.
My approach to counseling is Person-Centered at its core. The Person-Centered approach values empowerment, empathy, genuineness, and the therapeutic relationship between counselor and client. It is important to me that when a client walks out of my office they feel respected, heard, and a bit more hopeful. In my counseling approach, I also pull from other approaches such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness in order to develop various coping skills and strategies. I have experience treating issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and grief. I am comfortable working with all different age groups, races, ethnicities, and the LGBTQ+ community. The therapeutic process looks different for each person and I will thoughtfully help craft a plan that works best for you. Your counseling experience will be just as unique as you! Let’s have a chat!
